MONDAY FINISH

April 30 2018

It looks like we've finally hit the week that is going to have us transition from a winter, to borrow a phrase from The Hip, that was hanging on by the fangs into whatever our new normal is, when it comes to what we used to call spring.

I feel almost confident enough to take my snows off. I said almost.

Rideau View Golf Club is also going through a season of transition. Head Pro Paul Sherratt has revealed that this, his 41st season at Rideau View, will be his last as Head Pro.

Over the last few months Rideau View general manager Steve Ducat and members of the executive committee have had meetings to discuss a succession plan.

Last week, Rideau View President Laura-Lee Arnot, announced that the legacy Sherratt has created with his professionalism, intelligence and member service, will be passed on to Director of Instruction Matt Robinson, who will become Rideau View's Head Professional for the 2019 season, in addition to maintaining his position as Director of Instruction.

Robinson has established a reputation as one of Canada's top coaches and was the recipient of the 2017 George Knudson Award as the PGA of Canada's Teacher of the Year, as recognized by his peers. Matt has built one of the top junior programs in the country at Rideau View and by maintaining his Director of Instruction responsibilities, ensures that the this program will continue to flourish.

"There's a lot of synchronicity at work here. I grew up at Rideau View as a junior and when I was ready, Paul gave me an opportunity in the early 90's to apprentice as a golf professional. After years of mentoring, he challenged me to take Rideau View's junior program to new heights. I am excited to take this next step and build on the legacy that Paul has built at Rideau View Golf Club." said Robinson.

Sherratt will continue to share his experience, insight and sage advice as Rideau View's Pro Emeritus.

From Sherratt's letter to the membership:

"The most significant moment in my career was when I was named the Head Professional of Rideau View Golf Club. It fulfilled a 'dream' and certainly washed away the memories of those struggles I faced with my game years earlier.

Being named the PGA of Canada Club Professional of the Year in 1990 and then again in 1995 were both huge honours for me. I reminisced about this during the 40th Anniversary celebrations last fall. The sense of pride I felt, at that time, was enormous. My comment being that, "I am proud as hell, that you are proud of me!"

I see that same level of pride among our membership when Matt received the George Knudson Award as PGA of Canada National Teacher of the Year...that pride, I assure you, runs deep, both ways.

Another proud moment of my career, is now, in this moment, as Matt Robinson is named to succeed me as Head Professional of Rideau View Golf Club. At that time I will assume the role of Pro Emeritus, which will see me support Matt, Club Management, the Board, and our Members as I 'ease' into having more time on my hands.

This succession assures the continuation of the highest quality of professional golf services to our members and their guests for a generation to come. I'm excited for Rideau View, I'm excited for Matt, and I'm excited for what's next!"

Nothing can be done about the weather or the change in seasons.

But with this succession plan, Rideau View leadership has positioned the club for an almost seamless transition at the top of its golf operations.

FROM THE FRINGE ... After picking up the sixth win of her LPGA career three weeks ago, Brooke Henderson has struggled. It's probably expected coming off the high of a victory. She missed the cut at the HUGEL-JTBC LA Open and finished tied for 43rd last week at the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship at Lake Merced in San Francisco. Given those results, Henderson slipped two spots on the Rolex world rankings released Monday to No. 16. Since her win, Henderson hasn't broken 70 in six rounds and her stroke average is 73.3. The LPGA Tour is in Texas this week for the Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic. Her best finish there in three tries is T13 in 2015. ... The PGA Tour moves to the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Club and Tiger Woods will make his sixth start of 2018. He's got two top 10s so far in his latest comeback. He is coming off a final round 69 at The Masters where he finished T32. ... The best scores relative to par at Quail Hollow over the past five years, according to stats guy Justin Ray (from the Golf Channel and a great follow on Twitter @JustinRayGC): Rory McIlroy, -54; Phil Mickelson -39; Webb Simpson, -24. ... Good for the women's game to see former world No. 1 Lydia Ko get her first win in two years after a couple of years of changes and upheaval. She's change her coach (from David Leadbetter to Gary Gilchrist to Ted Oh), her equipment (from Callaway to PXG) and her caddie, more than once. The LPGA Tour has never had the depth of top contenders it does now and adding Ko to the mix makes it even deeper. ... Finally, it's BBQ season and you combine golf and grilling. Really, you can: https://www.facebook.com/teamgolfgods/videos/852414998282551/
