When I was a young Apprentice at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club who was struggling mightily with my golf game, most people may have assumed my 'career' as a Golf Professional would be a short one. I would have been one of those people.
As I enter my 41st season at Rideau View, where I am honoured to be the Head Professional, I have been blessed with the opportunity to watch this club navigate its way from a 'no drainage, no irrigation' brown field thru to a TOP 100 course in Canada.
I've also had the chance to witness several renovations to locker rooms, dining rooms, cart sheds, range sheds, as well as the development of a practice facility which now features a state of the art Performance Center.
Those changes and many more, were well thought out, well executed and received critical acclaim from the golf community at large.
The most significant moment in my career was when I was named the Head Professional of Rideau View Golf Club. It fulfilled a 'dream' and certainly washed away the memories of those struggles I faced with my game years earlier.
Being named the PGA of Canada Club Professional of the Year in 1990 and then again in 1995 were both huge honours for me. I reminisced about this during the 40th Anniversary celebrations last fall. The sense of pride I felt at that time, was enormous. My comment being that, "I am proud as hell that you are proud of me!"
I see that same level of pride among our membership when Matt received the George Knudson Award as PGA of Canada National Teacher of the Year...that pride, I assure you, runs deep, both ways.
Another proud moment of my career is now, in this moment, as Matt Robinson is named to succeed me as Head Professional of Rideau View Golf Club. At that time I will assume the role of Pro Emeritus, which will see me support Matt, Club Management, the Board, and our Members as I 'ease' into having more time on my hands.
This succession assures the continuation of the highest quality of professional golf services to our members and their guests for a generation to come. I'm excited for Rideau View, I'm excited for Matt, and I'm excited for what's next!
Now let's get golfing!
